Transportation in New York City
New York City travel is easily accomplished using public transportation. Grand Central Station is a convenient starting point from the hotel.MTA New York City Subway
The New York subway runs 24 hours a day, serving 468 stations. Air-conditioned subway cars will take you almost anywhere in the city faster than a taxi and for a fraction of the cost. Subways run every 2 to 5 minutes during rush hours, 10 to 15 minutes during the day, and about every 20 minutes between midnight and 5:00 am.
Inside subway stations, agents can answer your questions and sell you MetroCard, NYC Transit’s electronic farecard. MetroCard Vending Machines accept credit/debit cards or cash.
New York City Transit Buses
You can find a bus stop about every two blocks on street corners marked by a sign. Most buses run between 5:00 am and 2:00 am. Bus schedules and route maps are posted on most bus stops.
Fares
No matter how far you ride, the New York subway and buses will cost you $2, payable by MetroCard. Buses also accept coins (no pennies).
MetroCard
You can buy a MetroCard at any New York subway station booth. MetroCard is also available at MetroCard Vending Machines in many stations, and in neighborhood stores.
There are two kinds of MetroCards:
- Unlimited Ride: $7 for one day, $24 for 7 consecutive days
- Pay-Per-Ride: 20% discount is given when you buy multiple rides, eg, $10 buys 6 rides
